Abstract
The stable module category is classically defined for finite groups over a field of positive characteristic and has become a key tool in modular representation theory. We will show how we can define a suitable stable category over a large class of infinite groups. These groups were originally defined by Kropholler and their representation theory is in some sense controlled by the finite subgroups. We will use this to show how to extend various classification theorems known for finite groups (due to Benson, Iyengar, Krause, and Pevtsova) to these infinite groups.
