The coordination of the Global Mammal Assessment, the initiative that feeds the assessments of the conservation status of mammals into the IUCN Red List, has recently moved to the University of Rome, Sapienza.

Dr Carlo Rondinini will talk about how, in addition to maintaining this mammal dataset, his research group has used the geographic and ecological information that it contains as a baseline for developing species-specific, global, 300m resolution habitat suitability models for (almost) all mammals.

Using these refined distribution ranges, Dr Rondinini’s group have undertaken global analyses of all terrestrial mammals to determine patterns of species richness, threat, endemism and to identify minimum sets of areas that to acheive a variety of conservation targets.
