In holographic systems, the presence of an event horizon, and the behavior of bulk fields around it, can lead to curious features in the observables of the dual QFT . For example, recent work has demonstrated how holographic thermal Green’s functions may not be uniquely defined at specific complex values of frequency and momentum, a phenomenon referred to as pole skipping. Pole skipping, which can be seen directly from the near-horizon behavior of bulk fluctuations, provides non-trivial constraints on the dual QFT , and, in certain cases, is tied to hydrodynamic and chaotic phenomena. In this talk, after a brief overview of the gravitational origin of this behavior, I’ll discuss how pole skipping can emerge directly from field theory analysis in simple two-dimensional cases and consequences for its chaotic interpretations.
