In an illustrated talk Jenny Uglow examines Thomas Bewick’s life and work, from his childhood on the Tyne to his Newcastle workshop and growing fame – a passionate, forthright Northumbrian genius. Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) transformed British wood engraving, bringing accurate images of animals and birds to less well-off people for the first time, and amusing them with shrewd, tender vignettes of local life. ‘With Bewick on my knee, I was then happy’, sighs Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. Free admission but please sign up via Eventbrite. Drinks reception to follow talk.
