Abstract
Engaging in memory control proves to be a double-edged sword. It is adaptive to the extent that unwanted memories are prevented from entering awareness, rendering them less memorable. Suppression can also have the unintended side-effect of reducing the efficacy of the hippocampus, which creates an amnesic penumbra around temporally-proximal experiences.
