Abstract: How do you redesign a home screen beloved by millions, without losing the simplicity that defined it for over a decade? How do you introduce new ideas on a platform where small UI changes shape how 100 million people navigate their TV? This talk explores the engineering and UX challenges behind Roku’s shift from a static app grid to a smarter, content‑driven interface, and outlines the new client architecture and experimentation approach that made this evolution possible.

This session will be of particular interest to students excited about UI engineering, software engineering, UX design, product thinking, and machine learning – especially those curious about building consumer experiences at scale.

We’ll also share more about upcoming Summer internship opportunities at Roku, including roles across engineering, design, and product, and discuss what it’s like to innovate within one of the world’s leading TV streaming platforms.
