Ancient Greek Philosophy on Music
- đ¤ Speaker: Ioan Zalevskyi

Abstract
Why is it that while one person thinks a particular piece of music to be good, another may disagree? What factors inform our musical taste and judgment, and what causes musical experiences of different people to differ? Does one listener even hear the same thing as the other? In this seminar, we will explore these questions through the lens of ancient Greek philosophy, focusing especially on the contrasting views of the Stoic Diogenes of Babylon and the Epicurean Philodemus of Gadara on perception and on the role that specialised knowledge may play in music appreciation.
