How can the historian best attempt to identify the impact of subordinated groups (such as Spartan slaves) on their respective societies, when their actions are often missing from the source record? This talk presents a theory of reading the ‘hidden transcript’ of such groups, based on James Scott’s theories of domination, resistance, and the ‘weapons of the weak’. It argues that there are good reasons to think that Spartan slaves engaged in more active resistance than is normally thought to be the case
