Abstract
Approximately 30% of autistic people have complex additional support needs, sometimes referred to as ‘profound autism’. This group are consistently under-represented in research studies meaning we know least about those potentially most in need of evidence-based support. My research focuses on how we can develop more inclusive approaches to enable broader research participation by autistic people with complex support needs. In this presentation, I will discuss insights into some of the ethical complexities of working with this group drawn from a co-produced study, working with researchers, families, school-based professionals and autistic people. I will consider some of the challenges experienced by researchers in the field and suggest approaches to address these in practice.
