We have been studying the ways that retroviruses assemble themselves and have learned how the viral RNA is recognised and captured in the infected cell by adopting a recognisable shape. Understanding this process has led to us using these viruses for gene delivery purposes. We have extended our studies to rotaviruses and have begun to identify similar RNA shapes which may have similar functions. This has extended into studying the site in the cell that rotavirus replication occurs where have made novel observations on the nature of the viroplasms, or virus factories, within the infected cell and of ways with which to inhibit virus replication.
