Abstract
The versatile technique of preparing multilayers by consecutive alternating adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes can be adapted to coat sacrificial colloidal sub-strates. This enables fabrication of capsules with well-defined:
- Size and shape - Wall thickness and composition - Multiple components and variation along the normal
Consequently these capsules offer the control of the permeability along the normal via pH, salt, temperature, light, ultrasound, or microwaves. They therefore promise applica-tions in many areas making use of controlled release. Examples on this will be given by means of drug delivery and remote controlled release inside cells and of triggering of chemical reactions in enzyme chemistry. The latter can be induced via multicompart-ment capsules or via fusion of capsules containing different reactants.
