Stable Isotopes and Diagenesis: determining the effects of post-depositional processes on the preservation of collagen in archaeological bone

Abstract
Chemical analyses of collagen in human bone are increasingly being used as a method of acquiring direct information about archaeological populations. However, due to the structure of bone, it is highly susceptible to certain factors in the burial environment and this affects the preservation of collagen. Researchers have attempted to identify all of these factors as well as methods of quantifying collagen preservation. While attempting to understand low sample preservation rates, the author potentially calls into question one of the most widely used of these methods- the C/N ratio.
