Abstract
When does passive matter become living matter? If you pare down a living system, what is the minimum needed for it to be living? Do you even need matter at all for something to be alive? This discussion raises the distinct cultures that different disciplines bring to a question of many and no answers. From the Physics of active matter, to Craig Venter’s synthetic cell, to simulated life – what do you think is needed?
