Abstract: Arctic reindeer live in an extreme visual environment, with months of relative darkness in winter and long periods of daylight in summer. Their visual environment is also relatively UV rich. These animals have evolved a unique method of living in this environment. First, they extend their visual sensitivity into the UV. Second, they change the reflectance of their tapetum lucidum between seasons from gold to deep blue to increase photon capture during the dark winter. Reindeer in sub-Arctic regions do not switch the colour of their tapetum
