Abstract
The Mortal Storm (1940) was the first openly anti-Nazi film made by MGM , starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. America was in its isolationist years, not wishing to be drawn into another European war. The film was adapted from Phyllis Bottome’s best-selling novel; Pam’s literary biography, The Constant Liberal: The Life and Work of Phyllis Bottome has recently been published to critical acclaim.
