Abstract
My aim is to provide a molecular, genetic and physiological characterisation of the pyrenoid and the carbon concentrating mechanism (CCM) using Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a model organism. I have been using molecular and physiological techniques to assess the phenotype of several pyrenoid and CCM mutants. The pyrenoid mutants, although they differ only in the sequence of the Rubisco small subunit, show marked differences in pyrenoid morphology and CCM physiology. These mutants provide a framework to investigate the molecular basis of pyrenoid formation and the relationship between pyrenoid formation and CCM induction.
