Looking at Language Acquisition XII - Aspect markers in Brunei Malay

Abstract
It has been shown that there is a universal basis for the interaction between grammatical aspect and the inherent lexical aspect of verbs (also known as aktionsart). In other words, in many languages of the world, a given grammatical aspect will co-occur naturally with some verb types but not with others. This study is an attempt to describe the semantic functions of four aspect markers that have been identified in Brunei Malay namely sudah, baru, lakat, tangah and masih by looking at their co-occurrences with different lexical aspect verbs (as categorised by Vendler, 1967). We discuss the results obtained from questionnaires done with adult native speakers of Brunei Malay.
