This talk will introduce initial findings of my field work where I engaged in participant observation as a means of studying the strategy of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS). I recently returned from spending 3 months on board the SSCS vessel the Bob Barker as it participated inOperation No Compromise, which entailed sailing around the Southern Ocean engaging in direct action on the high seas, as a means of preventing Japanese whaling. I will discuss some of my findings relating to the legal, political, and media strategies of the SSCS , as well as other aspects of the organization observed while on board the Bob Barker. In addition to discussing my initial findings, I will also discuss some of the methodological challenges of engaging in participant observation in this setting, and applying participant observation to international studies.
