Abstract
An algebraic surface of degree d in complex projective 3-space defines a d-fold covering of the 4-sphere branched over a real subvariety, and may or may not contain twistor lines (fibres). This construction gives rise to Hermitian structures on dense open sets of Euclidean 4-space. I shall discuss the theory and various examples with d equal to 2, 3 and 4.
