The importance of high quality map data to support public policy is generally well appreciated and the National Mapping agency – Ordnance Survey – plays an important role in maintaining the base data for the country. Developments in technology which make the capture of map data easier and more cost effective, together with recent government policy that makes some of the OS map data freely available, has encouraged commercial competitors to the OS to enter the market and new data sets to be created. The impact is more and better targeted geographic data to support evidence-based policy.

As an example of this The GeoInformation Group, a Cambridge-based company, is involved in both creating large scale mapping databases and collected high value information that is used in a range of organisations. One of these is an interpretation of the age and type of all residential buildings in urban centres with a population over 10,000. This allows planners at all levels to understand the urban structure of a settlement, how and where regeneration is important and the impact of green field development. At the same time the data is used to support other types of analysis such as subsidence potential or implications of flooding for properties with basements.

These seminars aim to bring together a diverse range of individuals from the humanities, social and natural sciences to discuss the public policy implications of their work and research. Each talk will last 25-30 minutes and will be followed by open discussion and run on Friday’s in termtime 1-2pm.
