Abstract
This talk will centre on William Carlos Williams’ poem, ‘The Great Figure’ (1921) and its representation on canvas by Charles Demuth that followed in 1928 in terms of confluence rather than influence. It will broach their shared concern with finding new geometries through which to perform the archetypal Modernist city: its contested spaces; its nervous vitality; its dream-like flashes of illusion. Jazz will be played.
