The marine primary producers are an important link between the ocean and global climate. It is important to monitor the dynamics and community diversity of the primary producers. The satellite-based remote-sensing of ocean colour is proving to be extremely useful for the observation of oceanic states. I demonstrate how the remotely-sensed time series data on ocean colour, coupled with relatively simple mathematical models capturing the details of ecological interactions, can be used to understand the qualitative dynamics of marine phytoplankton, and to estimate the state variables and certain key biological parameters related to marine primary production. The qualitative dynamics and quantitative estimates retrieved provide valuable information about the ecological indicators of the marine ecosystem in a changing environment.
