Abstract
Being the biggest democracy in the world, the internet supplies linguists with the novel opportunity to observe texts written by young literates, who nowadays meet the keyboard in their first years. I will bring highlights from the story of On-Line Hebrew (Vaisman and Gonen 2011), demonstrating:- how the ‘spoken’/’written’ language divide collapses;
- how different platforms challenge language users to innovate, using the linguistic tools accessible to them, culminating in the creation of different jargons;
- how globalisation promotes borrowing in unexpected ways
- formation and merging of registers, sociolects and variants.
