Abstract
Romantic relationships are rife with the opportunity (and necessity) to put aside one’s own selfish interests and provide care, support, and resources to one’s partner—sometimes, even at significant cost to one’s own desires. But such acts of kindness for one’s partner need not be without personal benefit; indeed, they can be highly intrinsically beneficial for the individual. In the present talk, I will discuss new evidence of how being kind (and acting kind) can be highly beneficial to both parties in the relationship—and how sometimes, it can be detrimental. I will cover several aspects of relationships, including people’s sexual lives, experiences of love, and daily acts of giving and receiving care.
