Abstract
Between the late 16th and the late 18th century, a small community of English merchants resided in the heart of the old city of Aleppo. The English Levant Company formed an important cultural link between England and the early modern Ottoman Empire. This lecture will survey some of the intellectual interests pursued at the English factory, over a period of around 140 years. By tracing the ways in which manuscripts and antiquities were relayed from Aleppo to English libraries and museums, it will illuminate the connections between international trade and various fields of early modern scholarship.
