Abstract
The author has recently been appointed Chief Scientific Advisor (CSA) to the Department for Transport. The brief is to provide science and technology input to inform policy. By discussing examples ranging from High Speed 2, the raising of speed limits on motorways and the provision of additional airport capacity, the author will examine the role of the CSA in Government. Some insights into the generation of a national transport strategy will be given.
