Professor Griffiths will discuss the food security debate. The world’s population is expected to increase to 9 billion over the upcoming 50 years; can we rely on traditional plant breeding to deliver in the face of intensifying climatic extremes? The solution might lie in engineering plants to enhance photosynthetic rates and therefore crop production, but what are the technical and social challenges of such a scheme? The presentation outlines the details of proposed bio-engineering projects – the discussion allows you to debate their implications for the world at large.
