Abstract
I review the current state of the science of granular matter, recent advances and the insight they provided. In particular, I summarise developments on structural characterisation, stress transmission and statistical mechanics modelling of such materials. Some misconceptions in the community are discussed and a number of outstanding problems are pointed out.
