Scientific advances involve numerous extra-scientific concerns – the politics of funding, the interests of industry, the social impacts of new discoveries. But to what extent should politicians, industrialists, and citizens influence the directions scientific research takes? Should scientists be given the autonomy to assess their own work? Is it fair for public funding to go towards ‘blue-skies’ research? What might we lose from training scientists to be purely practical problem-solvers?

Distinguished speakers, from diverse academic backgrounds, present their standpoints on these issues; you are then given the opportunity to join in a debate which profoundly underpins discussions between science and society.
