PhD student Patrick Beldon speaks about a whole new kind of chemistry!

Stereotypically, chemists do reactions by dissolving chemicals and heating them up; however, reactions can also be driven by brute force. By grinding solids together we can do reactions more quickly and in a more environmentally friendly way. We have been using this technique to make materials held together by the coordination of metals and organic molecules. By using different metals or organic molecules we can tune the properties of our materials. Using this ability to tune the properties we are currently developing these materials as a new class of semiconductors.
