Since KS3 tests were abandoned in 2010, there has been a significant increase in the proportion of students entered for GCS Es early – e.g. in Year 9 or Year 10, rather than at the end of Year 11.

Looking at both OCR data and national data, we will discuss the magnitude of early entry, look at whether early entry has any negative impact on candidates achieving good grades, and whether there is any evidence that early entry has an impact upon A level subject choices and subsequent attainment at A level. We will also discuss future scenarios and whether the ‘linearisation’ of GCS Es is likely to increase or decrease the practices of early entry in schools.
