URBAN RESILIENCE - addressing risk and uncertainty in rapidly growing cities in the developing world

Abstract
Heightened concerns about the risks associated with climate change and rapid and often uncontrolled urbanisation are concentrating international attention on the issue of urban ‘resilience’. What does this term mean, where has it come from and why has it becomes the current ‘buzz word’ in the sustainable cities discourse? With reference to examples from Sub Saharan Africa, Asia and Latin America, this talk will explore the implications of the emerging urban resilience agenda for city planning, building and urban design, and how we deal with risk and uncertainty, as it particularly affects rapidly growing cities in the developing world.
