Abstract
In the meantime there are quite a lot of free alternatives to Matlab available. Besides pure open-source replacements like octave, Python is an alternative which is gaining popularity. I will introduce to the current capabilities of available Python packages for Numerical work and plotting functionality. The main focus will be on comparing features between Python and Matlab for those interested in replacing Matlab by a fully featured programming language.
