Abstract
We use high resolution fMRI (4 tesla, 3.6×3.6×3 mm3) to record simultaneously the responses from the human LGN and different visual cortical areas (V1, V2, V3, VP V3A , V4, MT, & VO). We use cone based stimuli to activate selectively the S-cone opponent response, originating in K cells of the geniculo-striate pathway, the L/M cone opponent response, based in the P cells, and an achromatic response (M & P cells). We find that the responses of the blue-yellow color pathway are selectively enhanced between the LGN and cortex, which may compensate for the weak subcortical blue-yellow signal. We also identify key brain areas particularly responsive to colour (V1 & area VO anterior to V4), those particularly responsive to achromatic contrast (V3A & MT), and those that respond to all types of contrast (V2, V3, VP, V4). This reveals major functional divisions between the dorsal and ventral streams in human extra striate cortex.
