Abstract
How was Charles Darwin, failed medic, transformed at Cambridge into a 22 year old naturalist versed in geology, botany and zoology and suitable to make observations befitting a Royal Navy Survey Ship? I shall explore the state of Cambridge science in the 1820s, and consider the life, science and influence of Professor John Henslow, now known as “Darwin’s mentorβ.
