Island Conquerors: the population dynamics and management of invasive rats on islands

Abstract
Islands are biodiversity hot-spots – less than 5% of the world’s land area but containing over 20% of the world’s biodiversity, and having experienced over half of recent extinctions. Invasive rats in particular have conquered over 80% of the world’s island groups. New Zealand has exported to the world methods for the eradication of invasive rats from large (>10,000 ha) islands. Management of invasive rats in this manner requires a comprehensive understanding of their population dynamics in order to optimise eradication, to prevent surprise effects after eradication, and to prevent reinvasion. In this talk, I shall present a number of case-studies which demonstrate the utility of a diverse scientific tool-kit to addressing conservation issues in the management of invasive rats on islands.
