When is a movement a ‘gesture’?

Abstract
What features do body movements have when they are recognised as being done with “semantic intent”, or “with expression”? I will explore this question by looking at bodily movements in speakers, consider how movements with “semantic intent” (or “gestures”) are organised in relation to speech, how they contribute to speaker meaning, and ask how this might be relevant for studies of bodily movements in music-making.
