Abstract
We will consider the problem of counting the numbers of conjugacy classes in congruence quotients of Chevalley groups over the fields Q_p and F_t((p)) using zeta functions. We will explain how to express this counting problem as a p-adic integral and apply methods from model theory to show that zeta functions counting conjugacy classes in congruence quotients of such groups depend only on the size of the residue field, for sufficiently large residue characteristic. In particular, the number of conjugacy classes in a congruence quotient depends only on the size of the residue field.
