Abstract
Condensed matter physics is following atomic physics in moving from observation of quantum states to their control, initially via variables such as external magnetic fields, but more recently using tailored optical and microwave pulses and, at the level of a few atoms, using electrical fields generated by scan probe tips. These developments, which also include deterministic doping of semiconductors, will enable both new science and novel information processing schemes. The results are contrasted with those for control of defect spins.
