Successful everyday interactions entail that we interpret the current scene and predict upcoming events. The brain is thought to achieve this challenge by learning through exposure to the environment and training. Yet, we know relatively little about the brain plasticity mechanisms that support our ability for flexible behaviour. I will describe work that combines behavioural measurements, multimodal brain imaging and computational analysis to identify and test these mechanisms. Our work suggests that learning optimises a distributed neural code for adaptive perceptual decisions in the human brain.
