Abstract
One Health or One Medicine encompasses the study of disease and medicine across the spectrum of species. Tragically outbreaks of such as the current Ebola epidemic in West Africa reminds us that more than 70% of human infectious diseases have their origins in the animal kingdom. Using historical examples of human and animal plagues we will revisit the common origins of human and veterinary medicine, then consider how today’s genomic revolution has opened the species barriers to research. Genomic technologies now permit understanding the genesis and treatment of disease at the molecular level in almost any species and tracking of infectious diseases around the globe.
