Abstract
A network of second-generation gravitational-wave (GW) detectors is on schedule to start operating in 2015 after a 5-year upgrade. One of its main targets will be the inspiral and merger of compact binaries consisting of either black holes and/or neutron stars. In my talk I will summarise how theoretical predictions of the emitted GW signatures are crucial for detection and how approximate degeneracies in the signals limit the accuracy of GW measurements. Despite these limitations, there is a wealth of information to be extracted from GW observations, and I will show how these could complement electromagnetic observations in the case of short gamma-ray bursts to potentially constrain the neutron star equation of state.
