Abstract
Seasonal influenza virus famously mutates and evolves so fast that it is necessary to update the influenza vaccine for each season. Given the selective advantage of rapid evolution – escape from herd immunity, and the means for it – a high polymerase error rate, they key question is hardly why the evolution is so fast, but rather why it isn’t faster yet, what is slowing the evolution down. I will present the fitness exchange hypothesis as a plausible explanation.
