Uncovering the Secrets of Rumor Spreading

Our society acquires new information every day. This information propagates from entity to entity in a rumor-like manner. This talk will present how rumor spreading can be modeled in a mathematical way.

Two different approaches will be presented: A probabilistic approach, which flows naturally from the way people interact and a deterministic approach, which is more easy to implement and test in software.

The two models will be accompanied by algorithms which are used to simulate them and the pros and cons of each model will be pointed out. The talk will conclude with how rumor spreading can be applied in various fields.
