Abstract
Several types of chromatin protein complexes are thought to mediate repression of transcription, often by packaging of DNA into compact structures. We have begun a systematic genome-wide analysis of the genomic binding patterns of the most important repressive complexes: “classical” heterochromatin proteins, Polycomb Group proteins, histone H1, and nuclear lamina proteins. These genome-wide maps provide detailed and often surprising insights into the functions and interactions of these complexes.
