Abstract
General and Particular
Both in the sciences and the humanities there is a tension between particular research and general theories. Since the scientific revolution (if not before) there has been a tendency, in both the sciences and humanities, to frame general theories. Does this survive into our time, or has the emphasis shifted to particular research with a reluctance to generalise? Have we outlived the need for general theories, or are they crucial to understanding particular findings in their broader setting?
