Geometric group theory is the study of the connections between algebraic properties of finitely generated groups and geometric and topological properties of the spaces on which such groups act. I will give an introduction to this subject before moving on to some applications. Time permitting, I will try to give an overview of some results linking connectivity properties of the Gromov boundary of a hyperbolic group G with the existence of graphs on which G can act with finite or virtually cyclic edge stabilisers. The existence of such an action is equivalent to the existence of a splitting of G as a special type of graph of groups.
