Abstract
Humans empathize with others but not equally. I’ll talk about our recent brain imaging research of racial in-group bias in empathic neural responses to others’ suffering. These studies demonstrate the key role of social intergroup relationship in emotional understanding and sharing, reveal the neural, cognitive, and genetic mechanisms underlying racial in-group bias in empathy, and illustrate how laboratory manipulations and life experiences can reduce the racial in-group bias in empathic neural responses. The implications of these studies will be discussed.
