Abstract
The aviation sector consumes 12% of the fossil fuel used in transportation, corresponding to about 2% of all human-induced CO2 emissions. Open rotor engines have the potential to cut fuel consumption by 25-30% compared with current aircraft.
I will start off with a brief history of jet engines, explain why open rotor engines are more efficient, describe how their design has changed since the 1980s, and finish with an overview of the future challenges for open rotors.
