Abstract
In his inaugural lecture as Paul Mellon Professor of American History, Gary Gerstle will discuss the contradictory principles that have long shaped the exercise of government power in the United States. Copies of Gerstleβs new book, “Liberty and Coercion: The Paradox of American Government from the Founding to the Present”, will be available at the wine reception after the lecture.
